>Q- I have a 6,300 square foot riding arena and I have been told that Hydrosource is useful for controlling dust, keeping the soil moist for longer periods (reducing labor), and helps soften the soil reducing impact on hooves and tendons. How much should I use and is it safe for use around people and horses? (A) - Hydrosource is commonly used in riding arenas for dust control, extending the time between waterings, and enhancing soft footing. We recommend the application rate of 16 - 25 lbs. per 1000 square feet for for arenas that will sustain a lot of foot or hoof traffic, to avoid the soil becoming too soft. This application rate must be incorporated thoroughly into the top 6" of soil.
As to the safety around horses as with any products store in a sealed, well labeled container out of the reach of children and all pets, (horses). Hydrosource manufacturers don't expect that the horses will ingest enough Hydrosource material to be a problem - a few gel chunks here and there can't be expected to contribute to foundering, etc. Since Hydrosource holds moisture, the arena soil will be wetter than normal - only you can decide if this would pose any potential hoof trouble. People with dust sensitive skin may have irritation are sometimes be sensitive to the dry dust in Hydrosource. I know gel-forming polymers have been used for this purpose, (dust control), very successfully for many years. > Got the order ... works great... seems to keep the arena moist most of the day if I water in the AM. Just for your info (you probably know this)... but by putting it in I don't HAVE to till each day after watering... the Hydrosource 'Jell-O' keeps the ring from packing down from the watering...(That is the real down side of watering). So... Hydrosource equals LESS LABOR AND MORE FUN!
